Yerupaja - The Butcher

One of the first few days circumnavigating the Cordillera Huayhuash, a sub range of the Peruvian Andes, these vertical giants of stone come into view. The highest of the chain, and one of the most dangerous mountain in South America, Yerupaja makes itself visible. along with its younger brother, Yerupaja Chico. Also known as The Butcher, it's knife-like summit ridge and overhanging mushroom ice makes it imposing not only for the climbers, but to those who gaze at its immensity from below. The gateway into this mountain chain is like entering into a world of living giants. Mountains that speak with voices that have echoed from ages past.

- Ronnie Forslund

"Yerupaja was the central focus of the Huayhuash throughout my trek around the Cordillera. The second highest mountain Peru, and, to me, the most beautiful mountain in Peru. There is something about seeing its vertical walls that tower so much higher than any other peak in the chain, it was glorious to witness from all sides, and every face did not disappoint. It was also daunting knowing that, as a climber, there are mountains in the world like Yerupaja that, though accessible, look impossibly to climb from all sides. It makes me stand in awe even more."
