"This image was captured at 20,000ft on the rarely climbed Nevado Ausangate, the highest mountain in the Cusco region of the Peruvian Andes. Overlooking the Vilcanota range and Mariposa group, we see a view that not many have witnessed. This route, rarely used on Ausangate, traverses a knife-edge snow ridge, and along the way, you gaze below at the rugged beauty of ice and rock. Splitting these peaks is one of the most essential glaciers to the Amazon River, the Mariposa glacier. Though melting, it presents awe, beauty, and fragility, even though the youth of these peaks is ancient. This image is a reminder that we as humans are not any greater with a mountain beneath our feet. Even standing on one of the highest peaks in South America, I still feel just as far from the heavens." - Ronnie Forslund
